Brian Selby, Bill Hanson, Theo DeKuyper: About being aboard the HMAS Sydney in 1964 headed for Australia’s secret war.
The forth in a series of interviews with Pres. Brian Selby on "Service' Voices" 105.5FM Radio Adelaide
Broadcast on 7th. November 2016
This interview was originally broadcast in two parts. After theoriginal recording was finished, Brian, Bill & Theo continued chatting, so Helen chose to keep the microphone "open" for thesecond recording. Here the two recordings have been combined into one.
In a cloud of secrecy, the HMAS Sydney sailed quietly out of Sydney harbour at midnight, 52 years ago, bound for Malaya and Borneo, loaded with troops and their equipment… off to fight in a confrontation that even 52 years later is seldom talked about.
Brian Selby and Bill Hansen, both from 111 Light Anti-Aircraft Battery, Royal Australian Artillery and Theo DeKuyper from the Royal Australian Navy were aboard the Sydney that night. In a unique interview they give Service Voices an insight into the journey and the era.
They also talk about the recent celebrations held in Kuching to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the ceasefire and declaration of the end of the Indonesian confrontation with Malaysia.
